While the Rest of the World Bundles Up, It Girls Go Sheer

Blustery December weather has descended upon us like a thick layer of cappuccino foam, and while people everywhere our proclaiming it the season of layers and wool knits, New York's fashionably inclined are turning toward less practical options.

As I flip through videos of women preaching the stylistic benefits of a sheer top over the everyday black bra or red tights with last season's micro shorts, I am reminded of fights with my father in high school where he would remind me to "always have a coat". After minutes of glaring and head shakes, he would mutter into the distance that this was why he should've had sons. My sister and I (and sometimes even my mom herself) would always choose fashion over function in colder months, opting for short sleeves or crop tops instead of shearling and overcoats. I can only imagine what the fathers of today are saying as they watch us pair sheer tights with paper-thin tops for an evening out on the town.

While the winter sheer trend is nothing new (women have always loved a good pair of tights!), this year feels especially impactful as people experiment with new ways of experimenting with the "bare all" look. Rhode x Matilda Djerf's new holiday lip peptide treatment broke the internet with it's sparkly sheer look and clever marketing that nods toward it-girl Cindy Lou Who of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Breaking from tradition as Gen Z so loves to do, some are even opting for clear wrapping paper on their presents this year for a modern, glossy look under the tree.

My personal favorite sheer accessory making a comeback this year are statement opera gloves, perfect for pairing with holiday festivewear or your most basic peacoat. While a deviation from the tried-and-true heavy knit gloves your mother has begged you to wear since 2006, this fun new take adds a pop of color or shine to any drab winter outfit without seeming over-the-top.

In a year that has left so many Americans feeling guarded and vulnerable, this trend is a fascinating look at how humankind responds to political and cultural climates with fashion. Instead of swaddling ourselves in comfort clothes and endless layers, powerful tastemakers have chosen to show a little skin, proving there is no greater strength than showing vulnerability in times of strife. I think we could all use a touch of mystery and human touch as another crazy year comes to an end. Perhaps as we head into 2025, we will all learn to find the beauty in having a little fun, dressing a little less practically, and being a little more human.
